August 22 Less pain is more gain for gym junkies - health - 28 July 2007 - New ScientistThis brief article is definitely worth reading (click on link below). In short, the research suggests that taking a break while exercising, instead of just going straight through, may result in burning more fat (than the same exercise without a break). It makes sense to me, but what I don't know is whether it matters how long of a break is taken. In the study, a 20 minute rest was used. I think future research should take a look at whether shorter breaks, such as 5 minutes, have similar results. Afterall, most of us have only a limited amount of time to train anyway, so a long break is not as realistic. Still, this is a fascinating finding, and if you have the time to spare, I would definitely recommend giving it a try.

August 21 How many calories am I REALLY burning? You've heard it all: You'll burn 600 in one hour by doing a certain exercise, you'll burn more calories drinking ice water, there's a pill that will let you burn calories and you don't even have to workout....you've heard it all, right?
So have I. In fact, generally when I first start coaching people, all they want to know is how many calories they will burn while doing my exercise program. My answer: I don't know.
The truth is, there are so many different things that go into energy burning, that no one can really know. So yes, when you are doing the elliptical for 30 minutes and they tell you've burned 381 calories in 45 minutes, it's probably not true. While age and weight party determine calorie expenditure, other things also play a role such as: fitness level, body fat percentage, body type, etc.
So, the best ting that you can do is to: 1) just forget about the calories and workout to feel good, or 2) invest in a really good heart rate monitor, which is customized specically to you and the specific activity you are doing. My favorite and most trusted brand is Polar USA.
As they say, "every body has a story." I encourage you to let your body tell it's story, instead of letting a basic exercise machine or type of food tell the story for you.
To your health,
