25 Best New Power Foods - MSN Health & Fitness - Diet & Fitness

I love this list! I am so used to reading about "super foods" or "power foods" that I can usually recite the full list before I even open it. This is an updated list filled with new ideas, healthy alternatives, and tasty treats. I would recommend printing out this entire list and bringing it along with you next time you go grocery shopping. Ideas and healthy recipes welcome!

Study: Omega-3 fatty acids reduce blood pressure - CNN.com

"A diet with liberal servings of fish, nuts and seeds rich in nutrients called omega-3 fatty acids can help lower a person's blood pressure, according to a study released Monday."

Dieting most always fails in the long run - Diet & Nutrition - MSNBC.com

Okay, since no one seems to believe me when I say it, I've pulled MSNBC and their research group to tell you the same! DIETING DOESN'T WORK! DIETING DOESN'T WORK! DIETING DOESN'T WORK! Got it? That doesn't mean your hopeless-- better in fact, you have an opportunity to change your lifestyle, your daily habits and behaviors, and you can keep that sleek physique forever--and guess what, no rules about what you can't eat or must eat. Just don't overdo it, and add some fruit, veggies, low-fat dairy, whole grains, and lean protein in the mix, along with a healthy dose of daily exercise--you look better, you feel better, and the best part--it's forever! MSNBC.com also has some great tips, click on the link below to read the entire article.

Here are some of their strategies:

    — Eat breakfast daily.

    — Eat a moderately low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet.

    — Keep track of progress through weigh-ins, food diaries.

    — Get LOTS of exercise — 60 to 90 minutes daily.

Organic vs. conventional: What do experts say? - CNN.com

I am a big advocate of fresh, whole, nutritious food in it's most pure, unrefined form. I try to buy Organic whenever possible, as I like the idea of the food that I AM PUTTING INTO MY BODY having to pass though certain standards and regulations, as well as feeling like I am doing something that is healthier for the environment. With that said, there still does not seem to be a lot of firm evidence pointing to higher nutrition content or reduced environmental harm. Here's an article that addresses both issues and sheds a little scientific light on the subject. Just some food for thought...no pun intended.

How To Kick That Spare Tire - MSN Health & Fitness - Diet & Fitness

Well, summer is just a hop, skip, and jump away--sweaters are great for hiding that bulge in the winter, but would be a bit obvious now. I get questions all the time about how to get abs, a flat stomach, or a smaller waist. My answer is always the same: diet and exercise. There is no way to spot reduce abs alone--you can have the strongest abs in the gym--the tough part is getting them to show. Here's a great start!:

Here is an article that I found on Wedmd.com that introduces the top 10 fruits and veggies that we should be trying this Spring. A few that made the list: lycopene rich, low calorie, juicy watermelon; high fiber sugar snap peas; and okra!  The author also includes some delicious healthy recipes.

Remember that one of the keys to improved health is to try new and different foods (see the article below: Eat Smart: Five important goals to improve your diet).

Do you have any healthy recipes to add to the list?

Line between overeating and binge disorder is a thin one - CNN.com

Link to Line between overeating and binge disorder is a thin one - CNN.com

This is a fascinating article on binge eating, and I would encourage you to read it, as well as take the Overeaters Anonymous test that can help identify whether or not you are a binge eater (and where you can go for assistance). So much of this article rang true for me from back in the days when I used to diet--I would eat "perfectly" when I was with others, or even on my own, most of the time. But then, I would make up for it by inhaling any and every "bad" thing I ate when on my diet. I felt as if I couldn't trust myself. The next day, I would start my "diet" all over again, even more restrictive this time, and punish myself by overexercising to rid myself of all of the extra calories. It is a cycle, it is draining, and it consumes our lives. Just because we are not starving ourselves all the time or purging does not make it any less of an eating disorder. I'll be happy to hear your thoughts.

Programs that create healthier employees can mean big reductions in health insurance costs

    Dallas Business Journal - January 12, 2007

    by Lisa Tanner

    Staff Writer

When I read this article, it gave me that "this is what I have been saying all along" type of feelings. Many people see the work that I do with health and wellness, and the work that I do with organizations, to be completely separate things. In fact, they are one in the same, working together as a continuum rather than a polarity. The "bottom line" is that employees are people first. People experience hight levels of stress, lack of motivation, low self-esteem and lack of confidence, the list goes on and on. And these people bring these issues to the workplace....still don't see the connection? Employers that are on the cutting edge are beginning to see the connection, providing employees with access to health coaches, smoking cessation programs, benefits that include gym memberships, nutritional counseling, etc.  Happy, healthy people means happy, healthy empoyees. And that is the bottom line!

Get the diet scoop: 6 promising supplements, 6 to avoid - CNN.com

There is no magic pill....when are you guys going to believe me? Anyhow, if you insist on relying on external tools to help you in the battle of the bulge, here is a credible article that I found on CNN.com that might help you make a more informed decision about which "diet pill ingredients" to choose (good news for all of you Seattle-lites: coffee made the list!), and which to steer clear of.

My 2 cents penny: stick to good old fashioned eating healthy most of the time (5-6 small meals throughout the day in the most natural state possible) and working out (try to break a sweat at least 3 times a week). Also, never underestimate the power of living a stress free life and sleep. That's been my magic pill!

Even if you don't see me...

    Today I was in class.
We were learning a new procedure, and this subject is not my best--in fact, it's my worst, so I asked for clarification, (in laymen's terms) "Professor, why do we choose this number for one procedure, and another number on the other procedure?" The professor looks at me and slowly and carefully explains, "well, as I explained before, we NEVER use this procedure in our field. The only reason I am showing you this particular procedure is so that you all can understand the next one."

Okay, makes sense, I think. Before the professor can get back to the lesson, a guy behind me (who must've not heard my question the first time), asks, "Professor, why do we choose this number for one procedure, and another number on the other procedure?"--literally, the exact same question that I asked less than 5 seconds ago. The professor stops and smiles broadly. Slowly, the professor turns, face a lit.  "[the student's name]," the professor exclaims, "that is an excellent question! Class, why don't we stop for a second and think about why that is..."

The class stops and thinks. So do I:

    Okay gang,

I suck at technology. However, being the good coach I am, I am taking the advice of my (dear) clients that have asked me about starting a blog. Here, you can ask questions you may have about fitness, nutrition, and overall wellness. You can also just gossip

Now, give me a little slack here, I am new at this, but learning is a part of life, and I am happy to share a little bit of me, with you. Cheers!
